Follow-up & Replacement

Follow-up is an important part of successful artificial eye rehabilitation. Even if the prosthesis is comfortable, periodic examination helps to keep the eye socket healthy and to ensure that the artificial eye continues to fit properly over time.

Changes can occur in the socket tissues, eyelids and surface of the prosthesis with long-term use. Periodic reviews can help identify early signs of irritation, dryness, discharge, poor fit or surface roughness before they become more serious problems. The follow-up visits also help to maintain the cosmetic appearance and feel of the artificial eye.

Patients are advised to have regular follow-up appointments for professional evaluation and polishing, adjustment, and long-term maintenance of the prosthesis at Reform Vision.

At follow-up visits, the following may be assessed:

* Socket tissue fitness
* Position and closure of eyelids
* Fit of the prosthesis and movement
* Shiny, smooth surface
* Discharge or irritation present
* Need of polishing or adjusting

Over time, the artificial eye may get scratches, discoloration, deposits, or changes in fit due to changes in the socket tissue. In these cases, polishing, relining, modification or replacement of the prosthesis may be necessary.

Orbital tissues and facial bones continue to grow during childhood, so children usually need to be seen more often. The prosthesis is periodically enlarged or replaced to help support proper socket growth and to maintain facial symmetry.

An artificial eye may be recommended to be replaced when:

* The prosthesis causes discomfort or becomes loose.
* Scratches / surface damage occurs
* Discoloration or lack of luster
too much flow or irritation occurs
* Changes over time in socket shape
* The prosthesis is no longer symmetrical to the face

With proper care most artificial eyes will last for several years, but the exact length of time will depend on the age of the patient, the condition of the socket, and the cleanliness and habits of the wearer. Regular maintenance can greatly enhance the prosthesis’ life and comfort.

Proper follow-up and timely replacement assist:

* Maintain the health of socket tissues
* Enhance comfort and prosthesis mobility
* Lower risk of irritation and infection
* Maintain natural cosmetic appearance
* Support long-term success of prosthetic
