Artificial Eye Fitting

The art of artificial eye fitting is specialized for restoring the appearance of patients missing an eye due to trauma, infection, tumor, congenital eye disorders or surgical eye removal. The procedure involves a comprehenssive examination of the orbit, followed by the fabrication and insertion of an ocular prosthesis that closely mimics the natural eye.

A well fitted artificial eye not only improves facial appearance but also helps to support the eyelids, maintain socket shape and improve overall confidence during daily social interaction. Each socket is unique and the fitting process is designed specifically for the patient’s anatomy, comfort and cosmetic needs.

At Reform Vision Artificial Eye Clinic the fitting process starts with a thorough examination of the socket and surrounding tissues. Pre-prosthetic assessment involves careful evaluation of the conjunctival status , depth of fornices, position of eyelids, motility of implant, volume of socket, and health of tissues.

Depending on the condition of the socket, impressions and measurements may be taken to improve the fit and movement of the artificial eye. prosthesis selected or fabricated to match the natural eye in:

  • Color and size of the iris
  • Color of the Sclera
  • Blood vessel architecture
  • Eye shape and contour
  • Overall look

Proper eyelid support and natural alignment with the fellow eye are given special attention. In the course of fitting, minor adjustments are often required to improve comfort, reduce irritation and create better symmetry.

Artificial eye fitting may be needed after:

  • Surgery (enucleation)
  • Surgery, evisceration
  • Eye loss from trauma
  • Congenital eye disorders
  • Serious eye infection
  • Disfigured blind painful eyes

Some patients may have mild watering, mucus discharge, or awareness of the prosthesis during the initial adaptation period. These symptoms generally get better as the socket gets used to the artificial eye.

A well-fitting prosthesis can:

  • Increase facial symmetry
  • Restore realistic appearance
  • Support for eyelid contouring
  • Enhance confidence and emotional health
  • Keep socket structure healthy

Guidance is also given in the insertion, removal, cleaning, lubrication and routine care of the prosthesis. Regular follow-up visits and proper maintenance can keep you comfortable and your sockets healthy over time.

In children, periodic enlargement or replacement may be necessary because the orbital tissues and facial bones are still growing. Over the years, adults may also need to have them polished, adjusted or replaced depending on changes in the socket and wear of the prosthesis.

At Reform Vision, our goal is to provide each patient with comfortable, natural-looking ocular prosthetics, personalized care and long-term rehabilitation support.
